RayCAD tags HVAC and piping elements in Revit. You set it up once, then run it on each view as the model changes. Every command is on the RayCAD tab of the Revit ribbon.

Supported Revit versions

RayCAD supports Autodesk Revit 2021 to 2027 from one installer. It needs an internet connection to check your license.

Supported elements

  • HVAC: ducts, flex ducts, duct fittings (elbows, tees, wyes, crosses, transitions and unions), duct accessories and dampers, air terminals and mechanical equipment. Native Revit and fabrication ductwork.
  • Piping: pressurised and gravity pipes, pipe fittings and pipe accessories.
  • Generic models.

Electrical and fire protection are coming soon.

Supported views

Floor plans and section views, one view at a time.

Start your trial

Click Sign In on the RayCAD tab and start a free trial from the sign-in window. The 15-day trial starts automatically, with every tool and no credit card.

Set up Auto-Tag

You set up tagging once and save it as a preset. A preset holds your tag families, placement rules and layout for a project or drawing format.

  1. Click Configure Auto-Tag.
  2. For each element type, such as ducts, duct fittings, air terminals, mechanical equipment or pipes, choose the tag family and type your firm uses. You can select several element types at once, and the window shows how many of each are in the view.
  3. Family lists show only the types in the active view, with a count of what is hidden. Turn this off to see every family in the project.
  4. Set tag rules where you need them. For example, give a duct length tag a default length so only ducts that differ from it get tagged, or set a frequency to tag every third or fourth element.
  5. In Global Settings, choose the layout profiles for tags inside and outside ducts, which way tags read, and which side of a tag the leader attaches to. You can import, export and delete your own profiles. The built-in outside layouts are Default 1 and Default 2.
  6. Save the setup as a preset.

Reuse a preset

Click Apply Project Preset to load the preset last used on the project, for example when you open the project again. RayCAD asks before it runs with a preset that belongs to another project.

Tag a view

Open a floor plan or section view and click Auto-Tag. Select the elements to tag. RayCAD checks the view setup, reads the model and places tags where they don't overlap. A progress window shows each step, and you can cancel at any point.

A whole run is one step in Revit's undo history. Ctrl+Z returns the view to how it was.

Review the result

The Review Tags window opens after each run. It shows how many elements were found and tagged in each group, and the time saved this session. Enter your hourly rate to see the money saved.

Tags that need a second look are marked with a red line in the view. The window lists each one with a plain reason, takes you to it, and lets you mark it resolved. Reopen the window any time with Review Tags.

Keep tags current

When a coordination round changes the model, select the changed elements and click Retag. RayCAD removes their tags and places new ones. Elements your preset doesn't cover keep their tags as they are.

Other tools

  • Cut Ducts: enter a length in whole millimetres, select ducts, and RayCAD cuts them into pieces of that length, measured from the left end of each duct on screen. It works on native and fabrication ducts.
  • Align: pick a tag, element or 3D section box, then a straight edge, and RayCAD lines it up with the edge. Align stays on so you can do several in a row. Press Esc to finish.
  • Parameter Sync Tool: copies values from a source parameter to a target parameter across the elements in the active view. Each section picks a family and its types, or a fabrication item and any of its services, then the two parameters. It can also copy a fabrication part's connector name, such as TDF. Verify one section or all of them before you change values. Two sections can't write the same parameter on the same elements.
  • Connect Conduits: select two conduits of the same type and size, each with a free end, and click Connect Conduits. RayCAD works out how they meet (in line, crossing, parallel offset, U-turn, riser, kink or sloped) and shows the join in a 3D preview with the elements around it. Set the bend radius, angles and route, then click Connect. RayCAD builds the elbows and conduit pieces in one step, and Undo removes them. The selected conduits keep their positions; only their free ends are extended or trimmed. Your settings are remembered for each conduit size.
  • Create Sheets: creates sheets in bulk from an Excel or CSV file with Sheet Number and Sheet Name columns. Check the rows and any warnings in the preview, choose a title block, then create the sheets.
